Local 791 Schedules Vote to Merge with Local 118

President Paul Markwitz of Local 791 and his Executive Board are in the process of securing membership approval to begin the process of merging both Locals into one super Union.

Under IBT rules, President Markwitz is conducting secret ballot votes by his membership to merge his Local with Local 118. With unanimous support from his Executive Board and the full approval of Local 118's Executive Board his membership has so far been very enthusiastic about a merger.

Once the vote has been conducted, approval for the merger will be sent to General President Hoffa. His office has made it clear that mergers offer more power to the members, better representation and a greater ability to organize.

Local 118 is proud to be a part of this historic event which will finally bring all Teamsters in the Rochester, Monroe County and surrounding areas under one roof.

Ernie Moyer Scholarship Winners

This May, the Executive Board of Local 118 presented five winners with certificates of achievement for being the first recipients of the Teamsters Local 118 - Ernie Moyer Scholarship Fund.

The Moyer family has set up an education grant along with Local 118 to help the families of Local 118 Teamster members. Once a year the Fund will present a check for a $1,000 to five lucky winners.

This year's winners were Mark DiConstanzo (Mark's father Anthony works at the UPS Geneva Center), Joseph Herbst (Joseph's father Gary works at Empire Beef), Emil Kostraba (Emil's father works in the Skilled Trades Department of Wegmans), Melissa Perkins (Melissa's father Ricky also works in the UPS Geneva Center) and Mariesa Gianni (Mariesa's father Tony works in the Warehouse Division at Wegmans).

Local 118 President Steve Mazza congratulates winners. Vince Moyer discusses his family and his father's committment to education.

Trustee Leaves Local 118 for New Job

With the abrupt shutdown of USF Redstar last year, many of our brothers and sisters were forced to start over at other Union companies in the Rochester area. Due to the poor economy overall and the lack of Teamsters freight jobs in the Rochester area, this wasn't always easy.

Some were lucky to obtain jobs at Empire Beef. Our trustee Roland Truelove was one of these fortunate few. He and few others took significant pay and benefit cuts in order to maintain their pension benefits.

Roland had already been through this scenario when St. Johnsbury Trucking closed down many years ago. A few months ago USF Holland was hiring over the road drivers in Buffalo, NY and Roland took this job.

He was forced to transfer his membership from our Local to Local 449 in Buffalo, NY. This transfer required that Roland resign his position as Trustee for Local 118.

"I would like to thank Roland for his many years of service to the Teamsters Union," said President Steve Mazza, "the many, many sacrifices he has made; time away from family, lost wages supporting various Union activities, volunteer work, organizing the unorganized to name but a few are a credit Roland's beliefs and his actions are what being a TRUE Teamster is all about. He will be sorely missed in Local 118."
