Teamsters Local #118 was proud to honor the son of William and Susan Davis. Brother Davis is a retiree from Yellow Freight and his son Jonathan Davis was the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship from the James R. Hoffa Scholarship Fund this year.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters holds an annual scholarship program in the name of former General President James R. Hoffa. James R. Hoffa became a Teamster member in 1934 and served as General President for 14 years, and, in recognition of his tireless service to the Union and its members, was honored as General President Emeritus for life. At the November 1999 General Executive Board meeting, General Secretary-Treasurer C. Thomas Keegel presented a resolution to establish the new scholarship fund.

One hundred scholarships will be awarded this program year. Applicants compete in one of the five geographic regions where the Teamster parent’s local union is located.

Thirty-one of the awards total $10,000 each. These four-year scholarships are disbursed at the rate of $2,500 per year and are renewable annually. Sixty-nine of the awards are one-time $1,000 grants. These scholarships are disbursed to the college or university at the beginning of the recipient’s freshman year.

Eligibility requirements and application procedures are the same for all awards. Recipients are selected by an impartial committee of university admissions and financial aid directors based on academic achievement, SAT/ACT scores, character, potential and financial need. We consider all applicants without regard to race, religion, gender, disability, or any other legally protected status.

William and Susan have three sons; Robert, Jonathan and Richard. Robert is currently attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute , majoring in Computer Science and Psychology. Robert hopes to work in the field of Artificial Intelligence when he graduates.

Richard is currently in high school at the School of the Arts.

Jonathan recently graduated from the School of the Arts and will attend Ithaca College where he will major in Acting. Jonathan has performed in over 20 shows in the past 7 years, and is currently in a production of 'Zombie Prom' and 'Journeys'. These plays are being presented by the community theater organization "A Magical Journey thru Stages" at the Auditorium Center on Main Street. Jonathan hopes to pursue an acting career after graduating.

This is the first time a member of Local 118 has recieved a scholarship from the James R. Hoffa Scholarship Program, and the Executive Board of Local 118 was proud to present Jonathan with a certificate on behalf of all the members of Local 118.

President Steve Mazza also presented Jonathan with a watch, shirt, hat and jacket from Local 118 which we hope Jonathan will wear with pride while attending college.

We offer the Davis family a hearty congratulations and wish them great success!

Don't forget to apply for next year's awards!
